Friends!

We wanted to let you know about an initiative in which we are very honoured to take part that the good folks at Amnesty International Canada are offering to music fans far and wide. It is called Artists For Amnesty. What does it do? As you may or may not know, Amnesty International is a global reaching movement that is committed to promoting human rights and social justice, and Artists For Amnesty seeks to make you, the music lover, more in tune with the goings-on as it pertains to human rights violations and the work Amnesty International is doing to right those wrongs. How does it work? Canadian recording artists such as ourselves are offering you a free track to download in exchange for your subscriber-ship to Amnesty International’s e-mail list so that they can send you updates about human rights violations around the globe and what they’ve been up to to bring about social justice. How do you sign up and get that free MM track? Visit the Artists For Amnesty website here, you’ll see a Mother Mother graphic amongst those of a variety of fine and generous Canadian talent, hover over it and you’ll be asked to submit your e-mail address. Amnesty International will promptly e-mail you the mp3.

Did we mention that the track we’re offering was, until now, only be found on our 2005 independent release MOTHER?
Yes, the track we are giving away is “Mamma Told Me”! Be sure to sign up and spread the good word to your friends!

Much love,

MM

This entry feels impossible
What could possibly be said that needs to be? An open word doc peppered with false starts

The False Starts and The Impediments playing tonight at The Breakdown Lounge

At least we’ve not had any in son
The musical part of our day is actually quite skookum and despite having played these 7 tunes ten hundred & two trillion times,
it still feels fresh and fun

Music is kinda like that, a romance that doesn’t grow complacent
It stays lusty, which might not help love’s cause in the human domain
For if the eternal honeymoon exists in one realm, why settle for anything less in another?

In these days of self-reliant sociopathy, the question is less pressing One can be alone AND sublime
In fact, the solitary man is a glorified hero
We find his heart errant cute

But the unaccompanied matron we disdain and attribute to patchy neurosis The battle of the sexes they say
More like seething man’s crooked landslide victory

Remember Sublime?
They still tour in fact
A band’s effort to carry on without their figurehead is often seen as fraudulent But I think it’s really quite valiant
Those songs bring me right back to the feral house parties of my youth
Oh what a sloppy time

Life is backwards
Dumb shits everywhere thrashing around in their physical apex
Brilliant minds weeping behind the bars of their broken bodies
And your final epiphany, if you get one, a slurred preface to an unexceptional departure Or entirely exceptional, this wild spray of paisley energy dancing tribal, delivered and free, boundless stardust

Someone said life is not a road, it’s a room
I get the message, but can’t help but think of being stuck in a room chewing my arm off Which brings us right back to that towering moment when lust leaves the building These days life is both a room and a road
A room on wheels skating down the icy throughways of North Dakota

All this to say, we carry on
Rambling and ambling
Trundling and traipsing and whirring past
Running and reaching for that flint of magic, only to recoil from a fire roaring with insecurities;
A combustion of embarrassment burning a hole in that toothy grinned car salesman we keep on staff
Whom we thrust onto strangers and bartenders and hotel clerks
Even to our friends
And to our families, sadly
But it’s mostly ourselves who are duped by the uncouth buffoon of our bruised egos

Who loiters drunkenly through our rites of passage
And who belches in our silent temples
Who slams his finger in the doorway to the universe in an act to shut it out
Who stubs his toe on the bed foot of an existential crisis
Then kicks the wall
Who’s portrait sports simpering eyes above a dirty nose atop a smile like a smear Housing teeth grinding with envy and spite
Who is entirely afraid of everything entirely

So yeah, there is the music and the careers and the land marks and vista points And the vegan restaurants and the car troubles and the new James Blake
And the boring irony of a snow swept April and our playlists on Rdio
And the used book store and my new jean jacket…

But I mean c’mon
I’ve only to report that the joust with mine self continues and the lance is gettin’ nubby What are you up to?
- RG

To our friends who have planned to attend the show in Denver next Saturday, April 6…we come bearing some rather bad news.

It appears that our long awaited return to Denver will be delayed for a bit.

Due to an unforeseeable scheduling conflict that has arisen, we are sad to share that we will no longer be joining The Epilogues and guests on April 6 at Summit Music Hall. The show will still go on, just without us we’re afraid.

For more information about the cancellation or any inquiries you may have, please e-mail the promoter at help@sodajerkpresents.com

Our utmost apologies to everyone who was looking forward to the show, we were looking forward to seeing you and know it’s been far too long since we’ve passed through! We are already looking at where we can possibly schedule a make up date in the coming months.

Much Love,

Something is wrong with my computer. Something at the very least. Error messages. My desktop is a mess. That old saying: your mind is your desktop. yikes.

I can’t tell if I actually smell alcohol or if it’s just in my head. yes, both.

Dustin Bentall’s van, despite a floundering tryst or two, still takes us places. Currently taking us to NYC, La Grande Pomme. Thank you Dusty. He’s going to be opening for us at The Malkin Bowl in Vancouver come June 15. So exciting. An old friend. Molly and I lived with him in an A-frame. Our blithering early twenties. Late nights bruising up against the muse and other flecks of magic.

I threw my fags in the garbage one week ago today. It’s at once imprisoning and emancipating. Damned if u do… so I don’t and be damned.

A sign reads Hanover/Ashland. I read Hangover.

Debussy piano flitters through its movements. The guy wrote this stuff for no particular reason other than he felt like it. Probably the best motivation for most everything.

Most Everything’s a Silly Thing To Say.

Reading The Boat by Nam Le. I really like it. Prodigious author. A cocktail of intertwining stories. Have u read Raymond Carver, the great American short prose writer? Similar style. When i was young my father would read him to us, and one that stuck out was about a man with fat hands. Beautifully descriptive passages about pudgy fingers and so on. I tried to copy it and wrote about a man with fat legs.

Or have u seen Short Cuts, the film based on Carver stories? Tom Waits plays an inebriate chauffeur. I recently watched Down By Law, a Jim Jarmusch film about an Italian, a pimp and a disc jockey (also played by Waits, again inebriated) who all share a prison cell and escape. I forget and remember over and over just how good Tom Waits is.

The Piano Has Been Drinking. My necktie is asleep. The Bouncer is a sumo wrestler. Cream puff Casper milk toast. And you can’t find your waitress. With the geiger counter…

Milk toast: a breakfast food consisting of toasted bread in warm milk, typically with sugar and butter. (yuck!)

Milquetoast: a person who is timid or submissive: [ as modifier ] : a soppy, milquetoast composer.
ORIGIN 1930s: from the name of a cartoon character, Caspar Milquetoast, created by H. T. Webster in 1924.

Geiger, Hans Wilhelm |ˈgīgər|
(1882–1945), German nuclear physicist; full name Hans Johann Wilhelm Geiger. In 1908, he developed a prototype radiation counter for detecting alpha particles.

anyhow… things are good. when I collect it all and make a pile; the dust of my experience – things are just fine. really quite perfectly adequate. devoid of devastation. equable feng shui and sizeable sang froid.

…

the 30 minute opening set is proving addictive. all peak and no valley. apogee for apathy. apexing through our benchmark anthems: the sticks, body of years, the stand, bit by bit, let’s fall in love, o my heart, hayloft. blam.

* and the unsuspecting humans are sparse with incredulity, so thank u.

* and the recurring pocket of mm mobsters: heartwarming. meaningful. so thank u.

* and the backstage climate is jocular, convivial, insightful. much gratitude and respect to the awolnation / blondfire gaggle. learning much from each camp in realms both musical and social.

Traded Debussy for Little Dragon. Crystalfilm is like being drugged. Every time.

Okay. the day is starting to make sense, which I appreciate for its rational safety, but despise for its dearth of sorcery.

Perhaps I should switch gears and wrap up this inane epistle.
I’ll do so with a lie, cuz the truth is we’ve got hours to go and are stuck in Washington State gridlock:

As we cascade through our vagrant deeds, and Gillian Welch coos of celestial romance, the New York City skyline erupts into gaze like a dreamboat brick shithouse in the eyes of a damsel.

To our friends coming out to the Ponte Vedra show this evening,

It is with great sadness that we have to report we will be unable to make it to the show tonight. We have had the misfortune of encountering some automotive issues that have unfortunately rendered us immobile until they are resolved. We extend our deepest apologies, and do hope that if you were going to see us, you’ll still attend to check out our friends AWOLNATION and blondfire, who will definitely show you a great time. Again, many apologies, and we hope to make it up to you down the line sooner than later.

Much Love,
